Artist Max Rosen

Growing up, Max Rosen’s only goal in life was to be an artist. After attending LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and studying animation at the School of Visual Arts in the 1970s he landed a year-long apprenticeship with acclaimed artist Robert Grossman. Then, discouraged that he’d never make it professionally, he burned his entire portfolio of work, and produced no art for the next 40 years.

But three years ago, in a burst of feverish creativity, Rosen came back with vengeance. He began creating a large body of compelling work including “Defective Characters,” a unique alphabet with true mass appeal.

Rosen never expected to display his art publicly until friends urged him to show it to gallery owners. Now he is represented by two galleries: Philippe Labaune Gallery in Chelsea, and Picto NYC in Brooklyn. Rosen’s work is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Graffiti in Miami, and in many private collections.

Defective Characters

Defective Characters is a play on words: In typography, a character is a symbol representing a letter, numeral, punctuation mark, or other unit of language. I also think of my alphabet as 26 defective 'characters’ who live and breathe in some kind of bizarre comic book world.

This work is fun and funny, to be sure. But for me the context is also deeply serious and spiritual. The title also refers to Character Defects - the negative traits and behaviors that ruin lives and make people generally miserable.

This piece represents my own personal journey in coming to terms with negative experiences and emotions, and transforming them into something creative, beautiful, and ultimately joyous.

Max is donating 50% of all sales to Achievement First Public Charter Schools to fill the gap in arts education funding.

Achievement First opened its first public school in Brooklyn in 2005. Twenty years later, it now serves 14,000 students across 24 public charter schools in Brooklyn and Queens.

Rosen dedicates his fundraising efforts to his mom, famed classical musician Judith Davidoff, who passionately volunteered teaching music at public schools over the course of her long career.

Philippe Labaune Gallery

Established by Philippe Labaune in 2021 in New York City, Philippe Labaune Gallery is the first contemporary art gallery in the United States specializing in high-end narrative art and illustration. The gallery set itself a course to highlight graphic design through showcasing the work of artists whose commonality is to explore new territories and de-compartmentalize the borders separating various modes of expression: illustration, painting, comic strips, and animation. The pivotal contributions of narrative artists in such cultural domains are showcased through a carefully curated collection spotlighting the convergence between fine art and comic illustration.
